Yay! My comp finally let me upload! (I think I overused the internet last month...so it slowed down to dial-up speed.)
27/4/08 - "don, kat, don don, kat!"
"Nintendo DS Lite cake" aka. "Second-Ever Cake Decoration"
All edible, except for the skewers holding the cake up, and the cake board.
For my brother's 13th birthday, he wanted a cake in the shape of a Nintendo DS. So, being the long weekend, and having nothing better to do, I actually went ahead with it.
I baked the cake (a Madeira cake) the night before, and that took me about 1.5 hours, and the decoration took me 8 hours (as opposed to 20-24 hours for my DDR cake...), so this whole thing took about 10 hours.
We have this expandable rectangular cake tin at home, which can be used to make different sized cakes, so I used that to make a cake 18cm by 21cm. I then split the cake horizontally about 1/3 of the way up so the top part of the cake was lighter and would not collapse under its own weight. The bottom part is thicker so it can hold the other section up. 5 skewers are inserted into the cake to hold it together.
No, I am not a Nintendo DS nerd and no, the cake is not in proportion , but I had 2 days to get this cake finished, so everything is pretty much measured by eye.
We have a white DS, and the icing was white, so no painful colouring this time! It's pre-purchased fondant. Had to patch it a few times, but it worked out a lot better than last time, the icing didn't split in half...in total I used 2 packets of icing which was 1kg of pure sugary goodness...
You'll also notice the little models perched on the bottom half of the cake. They're characters from Taiko no Tatsujin, which is my brother's favourite DS game, and I was trying to emulate the scoring screen after a song had been finished on the top screen. The models are all made from icing, too. I enjoyed the modelling, I've never done modelling before
Plus, there's an icing stylus. It's about the size of a pen, I held it in my hand and it felt like a pen.
All the lettering was done with a skewer dipped in food colouring, used like a pen. I couldn't be bothered piping anything this time because I didn't have the time
I might upload some more pictures later of the cake, there are all the details of the DS like buttons, etc on the back of the cake too (my brother's a pretty harsh critic and wanted it to be "authentic"...)
We ate the cake later, and it tasted quite nice Although the fondant icing was so SWEEEEEEET...
And my cousin who's overseas, studying, just bought me a Crimson/Black Nintendo DS. Can't wait till he comes back in a month...
